Being an Effective Leader is not a cup of Coffee!
Leadership is a skill that enables you to lead an organization in a given direction. It’s the art of motivating people and helping them achieve a level of success they aspire to reach.
So How do you become an Effective Leader?
When you are leading, you are the face of that group of people and you represent them in from of the world.
You are their guide and their mentor. That is a huge responsibility. To carry that responsibility, a leader needs to have principles i.e some core values that they have to adhere to.
What are these values that will make you an effective leader, right from day one?
While the list is a long one, I present to you just 10 on the many principles of leadership that anyone should follow in 2020.
10 principles of leadership
1. Be inspired and ability to inspire
As someone who has to lead an organization, being inspired and motivated to do their work is a must. When hurdles come up and things don’t go your way, its easy to give up. However, when you are motivated daily, when you remember your goals daily, it give you a mission and strength to finish what you started.
“People often say motivation doesn’t last. Neither does bathing—that’s why we recommend it daily.”
― Zig Ziglar
Here is the thing, being motivated and inspired is a job and as a leader, one should make sure to take inspiration and be motivated daily. It’s also the responsibility of a leader to inspire and motivate those who look up to him. Naturally, a leader should know how to inspire people, understand them.
2. The right balance of optimism and pragmatism
There will always be obstacles in the way and facing them requires strength. One needs to be able to conquer fear to face challenges. Being optimistic i.e seeing the silver-lining, is the way to do that. You must be able to see that no matter what, there is always a way. You just have to find it.
However, that optimism has to be balanced with pragmatism. Going headfirst into situations can lead you into worse situations. Along with being optimistic you have to understand the situation you are in. You need to be able to assess your options carefully and choose wisely.
3. Ability to adjust and adapt
Not always will things go your way. You will have to compromise and change your plans on each step of the way.
“The green reed which bends in the wind is stronger than the mighty oak which breaks in a storm.”
When you become too adamant you risk being uprooted. That is why you need to learn to change and be okay with the change.
As a leader, one must learn to let go of the ego and learn to see when situations as they are, and not as he wants them to be.
4. Have a strong set of morals and integrity
Being adaptable is important, but it doesn’t mean that you have to let go of your beliefs and your morals. You can find an alternate route to the destination when a problem arises while making sure that you don’t forget who you are and what you stand for.
You have to understand the difference between the things that have to change and that don’t. It’s important for a leader to stick to own’s words and promises. If you don’s take your own words seriously, why would others?
5. Always being a student
To face the challenges, along with optimism what a leader needs is – knowledge. A leader should always be a student and keep learning. To keep self up to date and to acquire new skillset.
Just, like a student, a leader should seek guidance from a mentor. A mentor who has walked the path before.
Every mentor is a student to another mentor. Every student is a mentor to another student.
6. Be open to counsel and suggestions
Trusting and believing in yourself is important, but so is listening to the suggestions of other people. At times it happens that we may find a better way of doing something if we listen to others and learn from others.
We can learn to form anyone and anywhere. There will be always something that you don’t know, something that someone else may know. Learn to let others help you.

7. Have a desire to serve others
Leading is more about serving people than ruling over them. To be a true leader, you should have the desire to help people to overcome the challenges they face and providing solutions to their problems. A true leader aspires to serve and empower those in need.
8.Have the ability to influence
When you have to lead a community of people to lead, it’s imperative that you know how to influence them. Being able to influence people is important for making them work in a direction that is needed.
You have to learn what people care about, what makes them get up in the morning and hustle hard, what inspires them and then influence them and motivate them to work for a bigger cause.
You have to know their heart to influence their mind.
9.The skill of listening
What is the best way to learn what people care about? It is listening to them. Not just hearing, true empathetic listening. Put yourself in their shoes and see their Point of view.
The thing about empathetic listing is that it makes you realize that it’s possible for a person to be right, even if their decision is wrong. It is possible for a person to be right and wrong at the same time.
When you listen to people you cultivate trust. When you cultivate trust, you cultivate influence.
There is a fair warning here. Don’t just listen to influence(It’s manipulation). Most people can see through that.
Listen to understand.
Being influenceable is the key to influencing others.” – Stephen R. Covey
10. Being proactive
This means taking the initiative in any situation. Rather than reacting, respond to the things that come our way, not playing the victim. It means not giving your power.
An effective leader is solution-minded and not problem minded. They don’t dwell on the problem they face. They find a way out. In the end, you don’t need to be rich, sitting in a cabin to be a leader. You don’t have to be in a position of power to lead. You can lead by simply showing people how to live and achieve by doing so yourself. You just have to be an example for everyone to live up to, in order to be a leader.
The list is not a complete onw but it’s a good place to start. However, if you strive to be better leader in 21st century ( which i think you do because you have read so far), let me tell you something…
